Modernization of the railway section Elin Pelin-Kostenetz"

"Modernization of railway section Elin Pelin-Kostenetz"

The section Elin Pelin-Kostenetz is part of the Sofia-Plovdiv railway line on the core conventional railway TEN-T network in the country, it is placed fully on the EU core corridor Orient/East-Med. The railway line between Sofia and Plovdiv connects the two largest cities in Bulgaria. Design speed on the majority of the line varies between 120 and 130 km/h. The project is clearly defined and its objectives of the Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020 (OPTTI) and is consistent with the Strategy for Development of the Railway Infrastructure. The Project will contribute to the improvement of the transport situation in the region and thus to its economic development.

The project is contributing to one of the main national strategic transport objective aiming at the improvement of the Bulgarian rail network to EU standards and its integration in the European TEN-T network. By modernising a substantial part of the section of the Sofia-Plovdiv railway line this Project will contribute not only to the economic development of the region but also to the improvement of the performance of the European Orient/East-Med core network corriodor.

The specific objectives to be achived with implementation of the project are:

- Reduction of travel time for passengers and freight by increasing the line speed to 160 km/h for passengers and 120 km/h for freight trains;

- Decrease in the maintance and operational costs for the permanent way and installations;

- Improving traffic safety and rduction of the number and frequency of accidents, and associated costs by elimination of the level crossings;

- Improvement of the quality of passengers and freight trasportations to all the destinations served by this railway corridor;

- Reduction of negative environmental impacts by increasiong the modal shift to rail

LOT 1: "Modernization of railway section from km 22+554 to km 42+200"

The section between Elin Pelin and Vakarel is the most difficult to perform on the whole route between Sofia and Plovdiv. Its length is approximately 20 km and it covers the largest railway tunnel in Bulgaria, 6.8 km long, which will be built in a tunnel way and will be fully compatible with the requirements for interoperability. Such a facility has not been built in our country since the 1950s, when in the period 1949-1951 Koznica tunnel was built, linking Stara Planina mountain and the Sredna Gora mountain.

The scope of the project includes a new contact network and new systems and facilities for external power supply and external lighting of the station areas. There will also be two double-tunnel tunnels with an approximate total length of 1.5 km, a road overpass and a road underpass, 8 bridges, 11 drains, noise protection facilities with an approximate length of 700 m, drainage facilities, new signaling and telecommunication systems in the stations and the construction of new video surveillance systems and passenger information systems.

Supervision contract: 20 940 000 BGN

LOT 2: "Modernization of railway section from km 42+200 to km 62+400"

The scope of the project includes a new contact network and new systems and facilities for external power supply and external lighting of the station areas. There will also be removal of  existing level crossings and construction of 4 new road overpasses, 3 bridges, 39 drains, noise protection facilities with an approximate length of 448 m, drainage facilities, new signaling and telecommunication systems in the stations and the construction of new video surveillance systems and passenger information systems. The scope of the project includes Verinsko halt, Stambolovo halt, Ihtiman station and installation of computer interlocking systems at Ihtiman station.

LOT 3: "Modernization of railway section from km 62+400 to km 73+598"

The scope of the project includes a new contact network and new systems and facilities for external power supply and external lighting of the station areas. There will also be eight double track single tunnels with an approximate total length of 5 478 m, two viaducts with an approximate total length 1005 m, 11 bridges with an approximate length of 777.70 m, drainage facilities, new signaling and telecommunication systems in the stations and the construction of new video surveillance systems and passenger information systems. The scope of the project includes reconstruction of Nemirovo halt.
